Brackets released for 2007 State Farm Holiday
Classic
The pairings are set for the
2007 State Farm Holiday Classic, which will be held at four
different venues in the Bloomington-Normal area Dec. 26-29.
The top seeds in the 64-team
tournament are Bloomington Central Catholic and Chicago De La
Salle in the boys divisions, and Pana and Chicago John Hope in
the girls divisions. Central Catholic won last year’s small
school boys tourney, while Chicago De La Salle was the runner-up
in the large school boys tourney to South Holland Thornwood.
Pana, with Southern Illinois University-signee Olivia Lett, is a
State Farm Holiday Classic newcomer this year. Hope is led by
two Division 1 talents, Zhaque Gray (Penn State) and Ashley
Brown.
Central Catholic will defend
its title in a field that features 14 teams with a .500 or
better record, including undefeated Peoria Christian (the No. 2
seed), and one-loss teams Addison Driscoll (No. 3 seed),
Chillicothe IVC (No. 4 seed), Macon Meridian, Stanford Olympia
and Minonk Fieldcrest.
De La Salle, with super
freshman Michael Shaw and talented Elliott Brown, face a large
school boys field that includes three unbeaten teams – Rockton
Hononegah (No. 2 seed), third-seeded Quincy Notre Dame and No. 4
seed Sterling. Sterling boasts junior Joseph Bertrand, who has
verbally committed to the University of Illinois.
The girls small school field
includes 12 teams that won regional titles last year. The top
eight seeds are currently 51-7, including unbeatens Metropolis
Massac County (the No. 2 seed) and Camp Point Central/Augusta
Southeastern. Last year’s Class A state finals runner-up
Rochester (currently 12-2) is the third-seed, and one-loss
Bloomington Central Catholic is the No. 4 seed.
Chicago John Hope, which won a
State Farm Holiday Classic crown in 2005, will try for its
second title in a competitive large school division that
features newcomer Park Ridge Maine South, the No. 2 seed;
third-seed Rock Island Alleman; and perennial power Galesburg
(the No. 4 seed). Undefeated Normal University High School is
also featured along with state powers Morton, Peoria Richwoods
and Kankakee Bishop McNamara.
Throughout the tournament, live
game updates and box scores will be posted on the official
